Notebooks

Thank you for finding your way here. I hope you find something that leaves you a little better for having visited.

The goal is a simple one. To share, what for me, have been truths that I’ve come accross in my life. I made a committment to myself at a young age (inspired by great men)┬áto follow the truth. I started jotting these down as I went along, sometimes in the form of a quote, and sometimes as thoughts. Over the years this has accumulated into 7-10 notebooks.

Some things about reading through these entries:

  • I’m planning to write the entries from my notebooks in the order they were entered, meaning if you wanted to view the progression over time you should start at the end, the end is where it begins. This should give the sense of chronological progression through the years.
  • There will be multiple posts for the same day. I’m going to try and get the full content input as soon as possible.
  • I will enter a date in the title when there is one available. i didn’t always do a great job at writing it down.
  • There a few categories in case you’d like to filter. Quotes, are quotes by other people. Thoughts, are my thoughts, usually in conjunction with a quote, so for example if you see an entry with a category of both Quote and Thoughts it means I’ve commented on a quote. Poetry is my attempt to write poems or songs.
  • To see a list of books and films that have inspired me click on the “Recommendations” link to the right. It’s pretty sparse right now (9/19/10) because I’m trying to get the entries in, so check back.

18 Minutes with an Agile Mind – A TED Talk

I recommended this video to a colleague of mine the other day because at the start of his talk he speaks of the newness of things and why he’s a scientist. Something to the effect that the first discovery of things is science, after that it’s engineering, then it’s technology. I decided to watch the entire video and was even more affected by the end. Give it a view.

Robert Grudin – “taking himself along”

“Socrates was once gossiping with some friends about an Athenian who was about to take a voyage. “Will he learn much from his trip?” asked one friend. “Unlikely,” replied Socrates. “He’s taking himself along.” Twenty-four hundred years later, the words still bite deep. Real learning is not, like foraging or money-making, a simple matter of acquisition. It is rather a process in which new experience that encounters is reciprocated by inner change in oneself. This inner change, this growth, is difficult, if not impossible, if one “takes oneself along,” that is, if one confronts every new situation with an armored identity, imposing a familiar perspective on unfamiliar events. This assertive attitude, this obsessive self, is like some government censor blocking any ideas or data that might provoke rebellion. Instead one must be ready to lose the self, or to have a sense of self so flexible and yielding that it poses no threat to the new. This flexible self is not a weak self; it is a stronger, more youthful, more human identity, open to the outrageous variety of experience and the profound surprises of change.” Robert Grudin

Preparing for life

Try not to spend your life preparing for life. Take a little time to live it.

Shoulders

Could these shoulders be stood on
Would they give you a better sight?

Or a glimpse to the truth that binds us,
or reason to turn right into might

Could these shoulders carry you
and get you through your darker days
or color your newly spun teapot
with a bright orange velvet glaze

Could you look out and see further
if you were standing on my back
Could those lessons I’ve learned and now carry
help you when you’ve gone off track

And could i tell you something
that you already felt was true
And give you confidence
knowing it’s not only you

And standing on these shoulders
can you peer into the second floor
where the shop keeper holds the special stock
for those who know to ask for more

Could these shoulders be stood on, they can’t carry the world
But step on up and I’ll try not to shrug
as you straighten out the curl

As you straighten out the curl

Love is eternal, the experience of it is not

Love is eternal
The experience of Love is not

Marinate in it when it is in you

Do not mourn when it goes
